Nefo Handayani Kertopati, or some might prefer Ibu Nuning, is a member of DPR
(House of Representatives) Indonesia from the fraction Hanura for the term
2009-2014. She is part of commission one which covers Defense, Intelligence, Foreign
Affairs, Communication and Information. Before being a member of DPR from
fraction Hanura, Ibu Nuning has been inside the political world since early
1990s for PDI. Before being one of the
representatives in DPR, Ibu Nuning has been working as a Public Relation
Officer in corporations and banks and currently she is being Communication Director/Advisor
for Texmaco group. Having interest as well as vast knowledge about intelligence
agencies, espionage and security has led Ibu Nuning to be one of the experts in
those areas.
Ibu Nuning,
having already involved in political world since she was very young, at 28
years old she already became the Secretary of Fraction, mentioned that
meritocracy is very important in the political world. During the interview Ibu
Nuning said that you can come from many different major in university and join
the political world as long as you have the knowledge and potential about
politic; there is no need to join demonstration, or being an activist that
require physical strength, as long as you have the intelligence and commitment
for it.

‘Many people thought that I was always being
an activist and having wealth as well as good education to be in my position
right now, but truthfully those things don’t really matter in the end because
what counts is really the fate and is it actually your calling to be in
politics. I have interest in intelligence and security areas since I was kid
for my father has introduced me into this world and it shows that I have the knowledge
and potential to be here. That’s what matters’ Said Ibu Nuning regarding
what people thought of her and what has triggered her interest in espionage,
intelligence and security matters.
Ibu Nuning,
being a critic and analyst for Indonesian intelligence agencies, mentioned that
she got the interest for intelligence matters ever since she was a kid. Being a
daughter of Purnawirawan R. Sutanto Kertopati, an intel officer for Soekarno,
she has indirectly being exposed with the life of intelligence and security of
the nation. In addition to that, she has been reading books and materials about
intelligence that her father had collected before and even until right now she
still has those books kept securely in her private collection. When asked about
the ability of our state intelligence agency (BIN) to execute their jobs, Ibu
Nuning said and she has said this before to the public, that not only intel
officers have to work efficiently in solving a problem or conflict but also
police department to work alongside intel officers in terms of prevention
effort and maintaining integrated communication between both parties.
Ibu Nuning has
taken intelligence very crucial in a nation because the government, the society
and all part of it always needs intelligence to make efforts for preventing
threats, conflicts and also to maintain the defensive action and security of a
nation so that all components of the nation feel safe and secure. BIN (Badan
Intelijensi Negara), or the Indonesian State Intelligence Agency, needs to
focus on the upcoming threats that might break the crucial components of a
nation; therefore, BIN needs to produce and use the intel officers to prevent
threats to the nation, externally or internally.
Recently, Ibu
Nuning finished a book about intelligence condition called ‘Komunikasi Dalam Kinerja Intelijen Keamanan’ published by Gramedia
Pustaka Utama. She mentioned that the book hasn’t officially been launched yet
to public because of some personal reasons but Gramedia has decided to put the
book on the shelves and it results in the book being sold out for only a short
period of time. The book talks about dissecting the perspective about system
and mechanism communication of intelligence and gives a clarification and understanding
about intelligence actions that are thought to be hidden and full of
conspiracy. For her, her views poured into the book might help students who are
doing project regarding the subject and help to give the understanding of how
intelligence agencies actually work.
For the future,
she plans to try for the next term of election as a member of DPR again and
keeps on doing her job as communication advisor. With her experience, vast
knowledge and significance in political world, it seems sensible for her to go
for another term because her past actions showed her determination in her job.
In addition to that, being familiar to the intelligence life and determined to
improve the condition of intelligence agencies in Indonesia, will add to her
list of capability of maintaining her position in DPR. Not only that she cares
about her position or the life of intelligence, she also tries to maintain the
quality of education regarding intelligence in Indonesia by teaching in STIN (Sekolah
Tinggi Intelijen Negara).
“Be clever and be smart. Those are actually
two different things; you are clever when you get a certificate from university
or school stating you have good grades and you are smart when you have experience
and you know how to get by in life. Be those two things to excel in your life.”
These are the words Ibu Nuning gave for the young people in order to excel
in life.
